This Jim Shore® Italian Santa is a folk art interpretation of an Italian Father Christmas. Re-imagined as a kindly 19th century Italian Sailor by American folk artist Jim Shore, this Jim Shore® Italian Santa wears a striped gondolier’s shirt, a brocaded vest and a country gentleman’s hat. In his right hand he carries a real metal staff crowned with a Tower of Pisa miniature; in his left hand, a basket of fine food. Jim Shore’s Italian Santa is inspired by a design or illustration in our Warshaw Collection of Business Americana, located in the Archives Center of our National Museum of American History, Behring Center. A vast assemblage of business ephemera, the collection includes Victorian-era postcards, greeting cards, letterheads, catalogues, advertisements and commerce-related memorabilia. Acquired by the Smithsonian Institution in 1967, this group of over one million items was the collection of Isadore Warshaw, a New York bookseller, who was concerned that the business community lacked interest in preserving its past.
Every Smithsonian purchase will arrive with a museum provenance card explaining how it is adapted from or inspired by an object or objects in our collection.
