I bought this as a gift for my grandson. It comes with ready made slides so he will be able to use it right away.He can also make his own with the extras that are included. It's very easy to use.

Remarkable tool for young adults to both do guided experiments, and examine specimins from the back yard. Definitely better used with the guidance of an adult.

I would suggest that Smithsonian address the issue of the microscope not locking in. As someone considering buying it for my 8 yo grandson, that would be a real drawback. In fact it would make it pretty useless.

Bought this for my 8 year old son. Focus does not lock in...falls back down after bringing up. Has something in the lens and doesn't show what is on the slide. What a waste of my $$. Smithsonian should be ashamed to have their name on this.
