Museum Provenance

This Barbados Scarf is inspired by a design in the vast collections of the Cooper-Hewitt. The Cooper Union Museum for the Arts of Decoration was founded by the three Hewitt sisters and opened on May 26, 1897. The granddaughters of industrialist, Peter Cooper, wanted to create a museum that would function as a visual library of design, serving to educate and inspire artisans and designers. Today, housed in the historic 1902 Andrew Carnegie mansion in New York City, this contemporary museum is now known as the Cooper-Hewitt, National Design Museum. Its textile collection contains a wide variety of woven and non-woven pieces, including tapestries, jacquards, and a large number of costume accessories.

Every Smithsonian purchase will arrive with a museum provenance card explaining how it is adapted from or inspired by an object or objects in our collection.
