Museum Provenance

When horses first appeared in North America, they were wonders to many Indian communities. A strong, fast, smart animal, horses can carry large loads and patiently allow humans to ride for long distances on their backs. Horses helped Plains Indians hunt, travel, and fight battles. Today, Indian people use their horses for travel or farming, and ride them in rodeos, powwows and parades. The exhibition A Song For the Horse Nation: Horses in Native American Cultures will be on view at the National Museum for the American Indian October 29, 2011 – January 7, 2013.

Every Smithsonian purchase will arrive with a museum provenance card explaining how it is adapted from or inspired by an object or objects in our collection.
