Museum Provenance

Boeing's B-29 “Superfortress” was the most sophisticated propeller-driven bomber to fly during World War II, and the first bomber to house its crew in pressurized compartments. The first B-29 bombers were delivered in April 1944 and were used exclusively in the Pacific theater. The most famous B-29 is the Enola Gay, which dropped the first nuclear weapon used in combat on Hiroshima, Japan, on August 6, 1945. The Enola Gay is on view in the Boeing Aviation Hangar of the National Air and Space Museum’s Stephen F. Udvar-Hazy Center.
