Museum Provenance

In the 1920s airliner manufacturers began using aircraft models as advertising tools to sell their products. By the 1960s, plastic and fiberglass had replace metal for advertising model aircraft. In 1889, then Secretary of the Smithsonian Institute, Samuel P. Langley, acquired a model of John Stringfellow’s triplane to inaugurate the Smithsonian’s model aircraft collection. Since then, the Smithsonian’s curators and modelers have developed one of the finest collections of model aircraft and spacecraft in the world. This collection is housed in the National Air and Space Museum.

Every Smithsonian purchase will arrive with a museum provenance card explaining how it is adapted from or inspired by an object or objects in our collection.
